Killby & Gayford believes that it is our responsibility to conduct a successful business today whilst generating a positive impact on society both now and in the future. We are providing a systematic approach for dealing with potential adverse environmental impacts at all stages of each project and the proposed methodology serves as an assessment tool to measure the environmental performance of our construction activities. It also provides a consistent basis for comparisons and for future eco-labelling and environmental benchmarking. The following ‘key’ initiatives have been adopted by Killby & Gayford:

  • Recycling of waste
  • ‘Turn-off’ policy to reduce carbon emissions by 10%
  • Redundant office equipment recycled through ‘Green Works’
  • ‘Mile Management’ and ‘Tracking’ of our fleet vehicles
  • Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP) on all sites
  • ‘WRAP’ associated
  • K&G accredited as site waste carriers to ISO14001
  • Installation of Biomass boiler at our joinery works
  • Return site waste to plant yard on delivery lorries for sorting and recycling

We have also developed sustainable action plans to look at carbon footprinting, demolition and long term opportunities of managing site evolution and taking account of the four R’s, namely:

  • Reduce
  • Reuse
  • Recycle
  • Recover

Naturally a great deal of sustainable investigation is carried out by the design team prior to our involvement and we have worked closely with designers to limit the environmental impact of a project through advising on the use of locally sourced materials and equipment with the least impact on the environment whilst satisfying adequate whole life costing requirements, advising on how standard component design could be better utilised and discussing how the building might be dismantled and recycled to minimise waste at the end of it’s life. Wherever possible we consider the use of modular forms of construction which might allow an element of timber construction and this together with prefabrication of elements and just in time deliveries can dramatically reduce traffic movements and carbon footprints.
Minimising waste on site is always a primary consideration, and sustainable waste management should be paramount in everyone’s minds to reduce waste production.

Killby & Gayford has formed a working party responsible for the implementation of our Environmental Management System and our Environmental Manager, Juan Martinez carries out regular site visits to audit implementation on site and BSI have been appointed in a supervisory capacity to provide external audits following our recent accreditation for ISO14001.
